Looks like AMD's newest offerings aligned with Socket AM2. A few months ago I put together an AMD system. ASUS A8N-E, Athlon 64 X2 3800+, Nvidia 6600, Seagate SATA drives. No complaints about it other than the drastic AMD CPU price cuts a few weeks after I bought.

Boards for the new Intel Core 2 Duo have a bit of a price premium as do the new chips. AMD chips are now priced very competitively and still represent excellent value. I still stuck with AMD because the hardware is considered fairly well proven and stable (updated BIOS etc.). Exellent performance and good value, also clearly the best performance for the heat output / power usage at the time.

But now with the new Intel chips one would have to compare closer price vs. performance relative to what your needs may be. AMD had the clear lead until the Core Duo's introduction. According to all the reviews, Intel has come back swinging hard with their new chips.
