OK -- I feel like Scully (or is it Mulder?) --
Ghost doesn't support 1394 drives, either.
So, I finally got through to Maxtor themselves and spoke to their "firewire" guru. He was not aware of ANY backup product that would write to a 1394 drive. Essentially, backup software is designed for IDE to IDE (or EIDE to EIDE, if you prefer) transfers. Windows will present an external Maxtor drive as a drive, but the backup programs tend to go to the backup drives at a lower level. At that lower level, the 1394 drive appears as an external device, but not a pure-bred EIDE drive.
So, for now, I keep dragging, dropping, and overwriting my previous backup -- which means it takes many minutes to do a backup each night, which is a real deterrent to doing it, you know?
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

EDIT: And I find it really strange that the maker of the drive doesn't KNOW OF (much less OFFER) a backup utility. They claim the drive is for "storage" not "backup" but that's a pretty fine distinction without much of a difference. |
