Miers Fallout

Some bloggers are posting emails they have received from readers upset and feeling betrayed by the Miers nomination. I have received some emails from readers feeling betrayed and upset by the reaction of some of their fellow conservatives to the nomination. I have been shocked myself by some of the readers who have said that because of the Miers nomination they will never vote Republican again, and that the Senate has already been lost for 2006 because the base won’t vote for Republicans since Bush nominated Miers.

I am a part of the base. So are Hugh Hewitt and Patrick Ruffini and James Dobson and Thomas Lifson and many others who are willing to give Miers a chance. Also part of that base are people like many of my friends and relatives that vote in every election, but do not follow politics closely enough to know where the latest judicial nominee went to law school or whether or not they contributed money to Al Gore back in the 80’s when he was still pro-life. I can understand how many might prefer a Janice Rogers Brown or a Miguel Estrada (my personal choices) over a Harriet Miers. What I don’t understand is those who claim to be part of the base who would prefer the judges that a Democratic president and Senate would choose, over Harriet Miers. That is the practical result of those voters staying home. I hope that emotions will subside over the next few days and weeks. We will know before long whether or not the Miers nomination was a brilliant move or a horrible disaster. The more I hear about her, the more I like her, but it is still early and much is yet unknown. What I do know is that many have been turned off by the “I am taking my toys and going home” attitude that some displayed over the matter.

Here are some excerpts from email I received from longtime readers and commenters who were upset by the reaction to the Miers nomination.

I have been a Polipundit regular reader for about a year and a half. I decided to check in from work this morning to get the update on the SCOTUS nomination. I was in no way prepared for the hatred and childishness of the regular posters.

I was a dem for 30 plus years. My parents were FDR democrats (I am sure they are rolling in their graves at what their beloved party has become.) I voted for Clinton in 1992, in 1996 I was so disgusted with the Dems I didn’t even vote. In 2000 I decided to take a good long look at GWB and the Republicans. I liked GW and voted for him and have not regretted it.

I wish you could impress upon your posters how many of us out here read and get information from the website. I enjoyed the the intelligent and informative discussions. Then this morning Oct 3, 2005 came. I was appalled and truly taken aback. I could not believe these were the same people I had been reading and respecting for the last year. They sounded like the DU.

I am a 53 year old woman, a Roman Catholic and was adopted from birth to wonderful parents. There is not much about abortion that anyone needs to fill me in on. My husband has worked in the steel mills for 38 years minus 4 years served in the United States Air Force during the sixties. WE have lost large portion of his pension due to the steel industry. When we had our first child at 29 I quit working and became a stay at home mom for 10 years. I presently work for a agency that provides services for disabled adults. From my background you can see that there are things in either party that I can latch onto. I chose in 2004 to join with the Republicans and made several modest donations(we have 2 children in college.)

I love reading your posts but now feel totally lost and disillusioned. What’s with their constant whining about we are the “BASE” hear us roar! When that poster said “Bork the Bitch” I about lost it. Who are these people? Where does someone like me fit it to that?

I may not have ever heard of this woman nominated… but for God sakes she nor the President deserved the venom these people were spewing. I would like to give her a look at the hearing, then decide. I am sure some were just venting like I am now, I guess I just anticipated a more civil discussion of FACTS from this site instead of threats and childish reactions. Don’t know if I will ever go back to Polipundit. I know this is long and you may never get a chance to read it but I doubt I will ever get the nerve to post at the site especially after this morning.

And here is another:

<<<

I have been posting on Polipundit for awhile but I think I will give it a rest for awhile. I am disgusted with the reaction to Miers from some right wing conservatives.

I don’t want a big fight. I am sick of big fights. I don’t want to see the Senate paralyzed for months while a few extreme people at either end of the political spectrum make it impossible for everyone or anyone else to come to any consensus…By acting like bad children spoiling for a fight because they think they have the numbers, they might ought to remember how they got those numbers.

Count me out. I want to see our political class act like grownups. I guess that means I am not a “true conservative” and therefore my opinion is worthless. I will remember that the next time these guys come looking for my vote.
