Wanna,

At this point in time, the Itanium is a "niche" product. Whether or not this statement is true, Intel (and box makers such as Dell) needs to clearly show that the Itanium processor is clearly better (and cheaper) than a comparable SUN product, therefore Sun workstations and servers will not command the premium prices. If that happens, Intel will sell more higher end Itanium processors.

If that happens (which I hope it does), Intel will attack higher margin markets, stalling their future. Hopefully, the cash flows from those markets will allow Intel to pursue other areas in order to leverage their dominance in uP so that profits will continue to grow.

If Intel cannot find other markets which will have huge payoffs in the future, Intel will not be a good investment in the distant future.
