All infants are self-absorbed by nature, jlallen. If they are responded to and loved and get what they need, and feel reasonably secure, they grow up to be pretty healthy adults. Certainly there is a range of parenting styles that turn out mature and self-confident grown-ups, but somewhere running through your posts I sense a belief that the needs of babies and small children should not be responded to--that you believe this will "spoil" them. If that is what you really are saying, I disagree. It is inconsistent discipline that spoils children--not giving them what they need. Certainly every child needs a space of their own to even feel like a family member, and Michael did not get this. I think most psychologists would agree that the way he was treated by Ron and Nancy was emotional child abuse.

Nancy Reagan was a pretty rotten mother, self-absorbed and preoccupied with her husband, and benignly neglectful of her children at best. Modest and self-effacing do not enter into the picture here.
