The US can play a leading role in the UN -- when we have competent leadership in Washington we do exactly that. Or the US can try to undermine the UN -- when we have incompetent leadership we do exactly that. We have endured four years of costly incompetence in Washington. Capable US leadership understands and respects the relationship between the US and the UN and knows how to manage that relationship to our advantage -- perhaps we will one day regain that competence. For now, we have lost our leadership role and we are paying the price for it.
