I'll answer relatively briefly.

In 2008, there were differing views of who Obama was by the people that voted for him. Some saw a socialist and wanted a socialist, some saw a moderate and wanted a moderate, some saw a non-partisan new politician and that is what they wanted. Obama succeeded in being many different things to different people - he succeeded in having people see what they wanted to see and focused on vague themes like "hope" and "change."

The column you posted seems to be the latest spin on why it is nobody's fault except the voters. No acceptance of responsibility and no understanding of why people are angry. Blaming the voter is never a good approach.

In short, many of the people that are angry are independent former Obama voters. They think Obama is not the person they thought he was. They think he is not up to the job just as Jimmy Carter was not up to the job. They think Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have been disasters. Harry Reid is so hated that he might lose to newbie Sharon Angle! The most powerful man in the Senate losing to Sharon Angle on his own home turf?

The article, IMO, is a big piece of denial. It is the "there is nothing wrong, we just haven't explained it well" stuff or the "people should just be saying thank you to us" stuff.

The election should be a wake up call. 1994 was a wake up call for Bill Clinton. But Obama is no Bill Clinton - he is much more green and a less skilled politician than Bill Clinton. Obama came into office never having actually run anything in his life. Perhaps the alarm will go off and Obama will just sleep thru it.....and there will be articles like this to tell him what he wants to hear - "it's not your fault"
