You may very well have have a point about the Symbios
acquistion. But it tough for me to see it as an "act of desperation".

My sense is that it gives them a lot of IP, a lot of design talent, new
markets, critical mass (aka the ability to spread fixed costs over a wider revenue base) and the acquistion price looks reasonably good. (interestingly note that LSI is not mentioned on the Symbios page...)

Also one has to remember that people like Altera and Xilinx are more
than welcome to the lower end of the ASIC market. LSI has pretty much (willingly) abandoned it - the market at the lower end and I guess by now (lower end may be 50k-100kgates and below is big )but not amenable to the future of SOC designs. Some of LSI's cores are well over 200k gates!

The fact remains that LSI may now have average designs in excess of 500 - 600 k gates and that places them in the top tier. If not the highest. IBM may be the best soon. But 2nd best is still pretty good. (By way of comparison ALTR's new Flex chips I think are 250k or thereabouts. This is mixing apples and oranges but I just wanted to point out there are ASICs and then there are ASICs. Again some of LSI's designs are over 3 million gates - that's pretty good!)

The issue is can you use a 3rd party's tools and a 4th party's IP and a 5th party's foundry to do the whole thing. Let's see - my contention is that this is not a trivial or easy task. Though the progress being made may surprise us and that may have been the point of Erica's note.
