Bush/Cheney announced that the US would unilaterally invade Iraq and knock off Saddam, period, no matter what -- do you not understand this?
Prove it. Give me a link.
What did the US do? It announced a non-negotiable, irrevocable offensive against Iraq. This destroyed what was left of the coalition and left us with no support ANYWHERE in the world outside of GB which is joined at the hip for policy purposes.
What papers have you been reading? What news channels have you been watching. What fantasy world do you live in?
Last I heard Bush had made his case to the UN and the key members of the Security Council all said "disarm or else." They were beginning work on a resolution to formalize the "disarm or else" before Iraq said they'd let the inspectors back in "without conditions". Sounds to me like the world is with us, not against us. Bush is keeping the heat on to get the resolution anyway because Saddam's acceptance of inspectors, based on past experience, is likely just a ploy. The heat has to stay on until Saddam is disarmed. Why you can't understand that is beyond me. Perhaps you are just stupid.
The key players are China, Russia and France -- the UN Security Council. And those three countries would have been very open to "disarm or else". That much I know.
No you don't. You don't know a damn thing - just saying it does not make it so. Show me statements from these three governments that indicate they were ready to vote for a "disarm or else" resolution even six months ago - never mind a year. No one, save the US and perhaps Britain and one or two other "joined at the hip" allies as you call them, was willing to give Saddam Hussein any kind of ultimatum a year ago. I challenge you to find any non-English speaking country that said anything close to supporting a "disarm or else" ultimatum prior to the administration's "we might have to do it alone" campaign.
You said a year ago that the US should go after Iraq. You also said this War on Terror would take at least a year. A year later, you are saying Bush blew it because he didn't push the UN a year ago to do something they were not ready or willing to do. And now you are saying the US has blown all hope of a coalition and the world is against us. Gee, that's not what the Secretary General of the UN said.
Don't you realizing that pushing it too hard a year ago would likely have blown the whole coalition? It was difficult enough to get support for going into Afghanistan.
Don't you realize that Bush has now convinced the world that Saddam is a "grave and growing danger" and must be dealt with? Don't you realize that Bush has changed world opinion about Iraq inside the space of a year?
There will always be nits to pick if you are so inclined, but the fact is that the Bush administration is nearing a successful conclusion to its campaign to disarm Iraq. Keep denying it and picking nits if you must - you are a fool, a joke and a waste of time. |
