You would have called Kennedy an outlaw for blockading Cuba and Reagan a loose cannon or stupid for calling the USSR an evil empire.

You really don't understand the first thing about negotiations, do you. Let me explain - a successful negotiation is when you get everything you want, give up nothing you don't expect from the beginning to give up, and your opponent thinks he got a great deal. You never give up anything without reserving the right to take it back if you don't get everything else on your list, but you always take and keep, unconditionally, any concessions the other side makes. And it frequently pays to have the other side of the negotiation, or anyone acting in an mediator capacity, to think you really don't give a damn about the consequences and will hold out until you get everything you say you want. Oh, and in case you're just too slow to guess at this part, what you say you have to have and what you really have to have are never the same thing until you are done.
