Thanks Jochen and Frank. In an offshoot of the netcraft.com link Jochen provided ( news.netcraft.com ), it lists ">80 million websites" which they also refer to as "hostnames" according to their April 2006 survey. Not entirely clear if they claim this is a worldwide number, and a few disclaimers on their number I'm not entirely clear on.

In the CIA World Factbook, they show (if you add the table by plopping it into a spreadsheet) >315 million internet hosts" (roughly a 2005 stat) at cia.gov

I'm not entirely clear on the distinction between the 80 million number for websites/hostnames, and the 315 million number for "internet hosts" (ignoring the date differential).
Anyone care to offer an explaination or guess?
