"Why would we do that?" The existing political and security situation in the middle east is unacceptable to us. Afghanistan went down easy. Iraq might go down easy as well. The US military works better than any of our other institutions. It becomes increasingly tempting to solve all our foreign relation issues with our ability to use force. It is ironic that Bush did not want to become involved in "nation building". But once you go in and destroy a government, you don't have much choice. It is almost certainly easier to destroy a government than to create a new, viable political situation.
