Ordinarily, the distinctions that I would draw between a web site and a host or hostname are along the lines of client-server relationships, with the web site acting the role of server, and the host performing as the client. Of course, those relationships can sometimes be reversed, at will under the right circumstances, but the Web site will normally have a static/public IP address whereas the hostname may either be static or dynamic/leased.

The authors may have had other intentions in mind, but that would be my take. I note that the listing of names and addresses on a global scale and the ability to depict them graphically remains somewhat of a black art, with some research organizations treating such data as extremely sensitive to their work.

To add to the excellent selection of sites that Jochen provided (that post is bookmarkable), take a look at Lumeta's site for another global view:

lumeta.com

Lumeta's map gallery may be particularly interesting to some. Just remember that you must click on the ink blobs to expand them to readable resolutions:

It appears that I have one of their global maps < Internet_Map_Labels > that's not on their site at this time. Anyone wishing to receive it, simply send me your email address via PM or to frank@fttx.org
