Dain Rauscher Wessels Report Forecasts Outstanding Market Opportunity for Speech Recognition Applications

MINNEAPOLIS, Jan 4, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Speech recognition technology will
see growing acceptance in a wide variety of applications over the next several
years, according to Peter Leppik, equity analyst at Dain Rauscher Wessels.
Speech-enabled applications--including enterprise applications, voice portals
and voice commerce--are likely to become a multi-billion dollar industry within
the next few years.

Leppik, who recently issued the report "I Hear and Obey: Speech Recognition
Applications," expects Nuance and SpeechWorks to continue to be two dominant
players in the market and sell more than $95 million in software licenses during
2001, up from $52 million in 2000.

"The sleeper use for speech recognition technology is in providing telephone
access to enterprise applications such as sales force and customer relationship
management, logistics and supply chain software," Leppik said. "Companies
collectively spend tens of billions of dollars on these systems, and speech
recognition technology allows these companies to provide anytime/anywhere access
to critical software and information."

According to Leppik, there is also a significant opportunity for voice
commerce--which uses speech recognition to take orders over the
telephone--particularly in developing nations where few people are connected to
the Internet. In these markets, voice commerce offers the opportunity to realize
many of the cost and convenience advantages of online, automated transactions
without an Internet connection.

their Dain Rauscher Wessels salesperson. Media interested in receiving Leppik's
research report should call (612) 371-7752.
