Whole Foods to Open First Store in Denver's
Cherry Creek Area

Whole Foods Markets Inc. announced on May
19 that it will open in a 42,000 square foot
portion of a Sears and Roebuck store located in
Denver's posh Cherry Creek neighborhood.
While Sears hopes to complete renovation of the
133,000 square foot store by next fall, the Whole
Foods portion of the space will not open until a
year later. The cost of the outlet is expected to
run between $6 million and $8 million. The
partnership with Sears is a first for Whole Foods
but company executives did not rule out future
partnerships with the retail giant. Whole Foods
southwest regional president Lee Valkenaar said
in a Denver Post article that the store will serve
as a "gateway to Cherry Creek." The location is
also less than a mile from a 15,000 square foot
Alfalfa's Market, which is owned and operated
by Whole Foods' chief competitor Wild Oats
Markets Inc.
