NYC Increases Subway Security After Safety Threats

NEW YORK — Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the FBI has shared with city officials a "specific threat" to the New York subway system, and is asking the public to be vigilant.

Authorities were increasing mass transit security after word of a credible threat of a bombing on the city's subway system, a law enforcement official said.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the threat is "specific to place, time and method."

"Obviously, this is a significant threat," said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.
