No Paul, they barely hit 1 Ghz with aluminum P3 parts which have similar stage count to the Athlon ( which also got to around 1-1.1 Ghz with Aluminum ). Let's not confuse any newbie lurkers out there.

Stage count is never the whole story for frequency, but you must also consider that to get the very high speeds AMD is using now they're not using a true 0.18 micron process. Their gates are running 70nm, which is the industry target spec for 0.13 micron.
