No. They won't promise Jeffords anything, other than perhaps some BS prestige thing or two. The Washington Post tried to make this look like a disaster for the White House. It's not. They have been designing their legislative strategy with this as a probability. The Post's liberal angle is that the WH can't SAY that they planned for it. They have to pretend that they are as upset as the stuffed-shirt Republican committee chairmen who have been brought down a peg by their OWN inability to keep party discipline.

This is a Senate Republican problem. Too much Trent Lott, too much Dominici, too much dumping on conservatives for getting in the way of the pork schedule every September. It's time for the conservatives in the Senate to lock and load. Dump Trent, and start pulling their weight in this war. It's time for a new guy in charge of campaign money, to make sure that only principled conservative candidates get party money.

Bush will make his coalitions as he has been: without regard for party, and wherever common ground can be found. He can continue to corner and embarrass those liberals with "Florida on the brain", just like he did on taxes, and is on everything else. That's working across the aisle, and the Bush team does it well. If the Senate Republicans want to get organized behind Nickels and come along for the fight, they will be welcome. But they still have a little more housecleaning to do to get ready.
