Turkey wants into the EU and France and Germany used that wish to coerce Turkey into non-cooperation. Maybe extortion is a better phrase than bribery there.


This seems to be the season for ridiculous assertions. The convential reality interpretation was that the Turkish generals that more or less run the country signed off on the deal, but the parliament, somewhat more suseptible to conventional democratic forces, refused to go along. W's team may or may not have contemplated instigated a coup to get around the Turkish parliament problem, I think there's some juicy quotes on record from that period.
