China to Resume WTO Talks With US in Late August, Paper Says

Beijing, Aug. 4 (Bloomberg) -- China plans to resume official talks with the U.S. on its application to join the World Trade Organization at the end of August, after senior leaders conclude their annual informal talks at the resort town of Beidaihe, the Hong Kong Economic Times reported, quoting unnamed sources. China's leaders hope they will be able to reach a preliminary agreement with the U.S. on WTO entry before the gathering of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in New Zealand in mid-September, when President Bill Clinton will meet his Chinese counterpart Jiang Zemin. In another sign that China hasn't given up on obtaining WTO membership this year, a Chinese negotiating team is already in Geneva to discuss the issue with European countries, the paper said.

The U.S. late last week agreed to pay $4.5 million to three people killed by the NATO bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade in May, removing one possible obstacle to a bilateral agreement on Beijing's WTO membership.
