DMA, when there's no food, starvation results. Food always goes first to family, friends and army. I'm sure Germans are not so cruel as to deny food to prisoners if they had enough.
Heck, even in Britain and New Zealand, there was rationing of food. One egg each a week or something. I remember rationing as a child at different times in the 1950s.
So, since Germany was in trouble, under serious attack, and mismanaging their economy, having come through the depression, started a war to avoid reparations and to regain territory and to overpower threatening states, it's not surprising that they were even more short of food and didn't have enough for their own troops, prisoners of war like my uncle Jim, let alone undesirables such as Jews, gypsies and others who were out to destroy the fatherland [or perhaps it was motherland] and had to be kept in cages to stop them helping the enemy [much as the USA put Japanese-Americans in cages to stop them helping Japan and right now has thousands of Islamic Jihadists in prisons in various countries].
Of course there's no shortage of food now - Americans are obese, not hungry - so the Islamic Jihadists are well fed. But if Americans were starving, I think Islamic Jihad would be on short rations. Heck, there might even be a Final Solution if enough of them are taken prisoner as the 1000 year war continues and Islamic Jihad refuses to give in. Imagine the situation if there's an economic collapse in the USA and there are a million Islamic Jihadists held prisoner. What then? Let them all go?
