WAR WILL FUEL TERRORISM NOT END IT, TONY

Mar 1 2003

TONY Blair seems to have as slim a grasp on the past as he does on the present.

He doesn't appear to understand Adolf Hitler any more than he does Saddam Hussein.

Yesterday Mr Blair compared himself with Neville Chamberlain, the Prime Minister who faced the growing Nazi threat in the 1930s.

It was a threat that could have seen the world over-run by fascism, genocide and mass slaughter.

Hitler was a monster at the head of the worldis most deadly and efficient war machine. He was underestimated by Chamberlain and most international leaders, and the consequences could have been even more terrible than they were.

Saddam is a tinpot tyrant at the head of a country that is almost bankrupt despite its oil riches. His entire regime and a lot more besides could be wiped out by the Americans in the blink of an eye.

Yet Tony Blair thinks they are the same. That the threat from Saddam is the same as the threat was from Hitler.

He says he is scared. Join the club, Tony. So are a huge number of other people.

But they are not frightened of Saddam attacking us with missiles which can barely cross his borders or with deadly weapons which no one is able to locate.

They are terrified that we will be attacked by fanatical terrorists.

And that they will be made even more dangerous and desperate by war being waged on Iraq.
