No kidding. The fact that the collapse resulted in more or less a soft landing for everyone who wasn't a Russian was not something preordained. It could have gone so very, very badly. As it was, the glee that much of the EU took in kicking Russia when it was down was a strategic error. Understandable given that most of the leaders had lived for decades with the fear of thousands of tanks pouring through the Fulda Gap, but still. There should have been more things like when Russia was invited into the G7.

Water under the bridge, I suppose.

The problem is that i-node is a huge fan of the Great man theory of history.

Which probably explains his bromance with authoritarians. Personally, I lean more towards the events shaping the results and people involved. That there isn't a single individual with clear vision and goals make the events.

Anyway, that worldview rejects the idea that things can be the result of several people working towards a common goal, either coordinated or just striving towards an outcome that doesn't result in a lot of people dying like what happened with the Soviet Union. Gorby played his part in that he did a credible job of guiding the USSR through the inevitable collapse. Not that he saw it that way, he was trying to save it from a collapse. Schultze et al were trying to keep the chicken hawks from attacking when the Soviets got weak. They weren't perfect, I think Yeltsin should have been treated a lot better, but they could have done a much worse job.
