I doubt it. Whatever negative consequences might befall the US, the negative consequences for Sadam would be much worse. He might live and remain free like bin Laden might have, but he wont keep his hold on power.

Once an attack is made on one nation under weak pretenses, its not hard to attack other nations on similarly weak pretenses.

Its not "weak pretenses"logically or international law. It might be consider weak pretenses by world opinion however and in many ways that is a more important consideration. Actually more then international opinion the big risk that that we have to deal with a mess in Iraq for a decade or more. Not a decade to achieve victory (not even a year) but a decade to clean up the mess.
