Security Company Installs Automated External Defibrillators Nationwide
Monday September 15, 1:30 am ET
Barton Protective Services First in Security Industry to Make Lifesaving Equipment Available in Company Branches

ATLANTA, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Contract security provider Barton Protective Services Inc. has installed automatic external defibrillator (AED) units at 31 U.S. branches. The company has immediate plans to offer the AED units, specialized training and a first response approach to the public and tenants at the thousands of customer sites it protects which include Class A office buildings, shopping malls, corporate facilities, technology companies, upscale residential communities, petrochemical companies and healthcare facilities. Barton believes it is the first company in the security industry to provide AEDs company-wide.

With the deployment of AED units, employees, customers and visitors of Barton branches will have a better chance to survive sudden cardiac arrest, the leading cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of death in the workplace according to OSHA. The American Heart Association estimates that every year more than 250,000 people die from sudden cardiac arrest. Our country's survival rate is less than five percent, but recent studies show that the rate has been proven to exceed 75 percent in the case of airports, casinos, and other facilities where defibrillators are located.

Barton installed the AED units in partnership with Cardiac Science, Inc. (Nasdaq: DFIB - News), a developer, manufacturer and marketer of automated external defibrillators whose life saving products are in place at the corporate offices, manufacturing facilities and managed office properties of America's leading companies. Barton is training more than 350 office employees across the country in the use of the lifesaving devices.

"Installing AEDs speaks to Barton's values of putting our people, and the customers they serve, first and foremost on our minds," said Barton President Patrick McNulty. "We are dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of our associates and finding new ways to broaden this focus. We believe AEDs should be as common as fire extinguishers in our offices -- and eventually in all the customer sites we serve."

Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the heart's electrical impulses suddenly become disorganized and abruptly stop the organ. Victims collapse and quickly lose consciousness. After a sudden cardiac arrest, a person's chances of survival decrease seven to 10 percent for each minute passed. Early defibrillation -- within three minutes of the cardiac arrest -- is the only effective treatment to restore normal heart rhythm.

"We selected the Powerheart AED model from Cardiac Science because it outperforms others in terms of ease of use, technology, reliability and cost of ownership," said Barton Chief Strategy Officer Charles Barton Rice, Jr. "When it comes to cardiac arrest, every second counts, and we know this is the right AED for our employees and customers."

Atlanta-based Barton Protective Services is an international contract security company employing more than 13,000 people worldwide. Barton Protective Services is the only company in the security industry to be named to FORTUNE magazine's list of "100 Best Companies to Work For" -- an honor they have received for four consecutive years. The company has branch offices throughout the United States and Europe. For more information, please visit the company's Web site at www.bartonsolutions.com.
