I wasn't talking about literal dollars and cents capital, but the capital of morals and values. There must have been some role models that your father modeled himself after. People don't arise in total isolation or moral vacuums. Maybe it was his grandfather or a neighbor. But more than likely there were many in the community that he could have found to be a good alternative to his circumstances.

When you lack any of these experiences, values and role models, it is hard to pull oneself up by one's bootstraps. That was my point.

If you look at the criminality of black youth, you have to ask a) is it because they are bad people, or b) is it because of bad circumstances. I'm arguing that it is bad circumstances. If it isn't circumstances, then you have to say it is because they are bad people. How do people get to be bad? Were these kids born bad because of their genes? I doubt it.

If someone is dealing drugs as opposed to ripping people off or shooting them, I think that is a better moral choice given the menu of things they can choose from (including the role of victim.) I'm not going to vilify a whole segment of society because they start the Monopoly game of life with 1/100th of the options that I do. To me, this is a public health problem and should be handled accordingly.
