I own 2 Winmodems so while I should be happy in your scenario I'm not: the Internet and information communications in general thrives on interoperability, that is, standards which all but the more idiotic mfrs adopt for the benefit of all users. The "Hayes compatible" phrase illustrates a de facto standard arrived at by the market without benefit of an ITU (or whatever standards body) setting the standard - but before the Hayes codes won out there was a Tower of Babel effect. I think that phenomenon is what was being referred to by the ISP who spoke of the HST standard for modems.

Another example is Apple bucking the PC trend; at least Apple is still alive compared to Sony's Beta VCR standard vs Japan Victor's VHS.

As the scenario exists there will be a period without interoperability due to non-convergence of USR's X2 and the Lucent/Rockwell melded design. Everything you've said about inexpensive upgrading on legacy modems (not too far back, however) made by USR is correct. To a lesser degreee it's also correct with Rockwell/Ascend. But if the ISP is required to install a whole new subsystem to deal with X2 vs modem cards for the Ascend version they will think twice, IMHO. And I suspect there'll be sufficient financial incentives put out by Ascend to make upgrading financially feasible for the ISPs that have gear which can't be firmware upgraded (older versions of presentday modems). Just a hunch if they feel they need more ammo in the war with USRX.
