Quarter-ending selling for window dressing
U.S. TRADING SUMMARY : Wall Street was slightly higher midday, but
largely drifting sideways as the end of the quarter and Tuesday's
Fed meeting to discuss rates beckoned. "People have a lot of
profits, but no reason to really sell. If anything they have a
reason to add a little window dressing to the end of the quarter,"
Arnie Owen, managing director of capital markets at Cruttenden
Roth said. The Dow was up 20 points at 7942 as advances led
declines seven to six. The long bond was range bound, off 11/32 to
yield 6.38 percent. Sharp moves in the long bond have partly
fueled swings in the Dow. The NASDAQ was five points firmer at
1687, just off the new high of 1688 and the S&P 500 gained three
point to 947. Although the Fed was expected to leave interest
rates unchanged tomorrow, the bond and stock markets were also
waiting for a slew of economic data that peaks with Friday's key
September payroll data.
