We certainly don't see much in the way of start-up activity focused on producing the next, revolutionary, ATM switch. Why is this?

Because anyone with even room-temperature IQ knows you don't enter a market in catch-up mode. You have to leap-frog. Terabit routing/switching and higher is the next game.
