We certainly don't see much in the way of start-up activity focused on producing the next, revolutionary, ATM switch. Why is this?

IP is taught in networking courses in all the engineering graduate schools. There are problems with IP, and folks like to 'solve problems' therefore there are theses written, and companies started with the 'next new solution' to the problems with IP.

With big folks like Cisco lurking around - using their carrot and stick approach to protecting their IP market - the start-up activity goes where the money is - now.

It is time to slide out those IP layers and move in a layer that can do QoS. Then the creative minds can get on with consuming bandwidth with video conferencing, real-time audio, etc., and the networks can supply this bandwidth.

ATM is more cast-in-silicon, not so many problems. Dull and boring. Not as much chance for handwaving and speculation on the future (needed for a hot IPO).

IMO as always.
