The battle shaping up is between Apple as a Design Co vs Samsung who is vertically integrated and has far more technical depth than Apple. Apple has the cash to close the vertically integrated gap if they wanted too, but I believe they don't think they can successfully manage such a beast. In that case, it pays to ask if the problem is with management, not the plan. Get someone who can manage such a beast if TC can't.

SJ was burned by the failure of Next Inc and his grand factory in Fremont, and then the subsequent Mac manufacturing as well. Once they switched to Asia, they never looked back at manufacturing in any significant way. What is interesting is that he took a second spin at CPU IP after the PPC gave way to x86.

Its interesting that neither Intel nor MS despite mountains of cash could foresee Google, none of whom could foresee FB. Neither could Wintel or Sony foresee the iPhone/iPad.

Why not run really aggressive VC funding with their cash? Intel Capital might be an example of why not to...
