Muzosi,

Me: "How anyone can get excited about a chip that's a year away"

You: "considering how people waited for almost 6 years for ia64 to metarialize and put intel back into the monopolist seat and save it from the commoditization of x86-32 processors, it is normal imo for people to get excited about hammer. not rational maybe but normal."

I've always considered Itanium an attempt by Intel to get into the higher echelons of servers, 64 bit, etc., and have hopes for it, but I'm "from Missouri" about it. In other words, I'll believe it when I see it. I know from experience that it takes years to supplant proven platforms at the world's major stock exchanges*, banks, insurance companies, airlines, auto makers, etc. I've been debating with Mary Cluney for years that it would take a lot of time, etc. Mainframes ,which have been given up for dead for decades now, are still very much alive, although only from IBM. Hammer, OTOH, is bandied about as a slam dunk by the more rabid AMD backers. What I'm saying is that, even if it's very good, I don't expect it to be on schedule at all from what I've seen and heard from AMD about schedule adherence. Then, when it does come out, how much backing will it have in all its flavors vs. P4, Xeon, Itanium, etc.? Only time will tell, but, in this business, Hammer is still way out there.

Tony

edit * Actually, with Compaq's throwing all of their 64 bit efforts behind Itanium, we'll see it at the world's major stock exchanges and banks, anyway.
