It was the first major Western civilization. I think it would have degenerated in any case. One of the things that did them in was lead water pipes. Lead poisoning killed off the upper class who had piped water.

A more important source of lead poisoning was from the bakery. Romans used grape juice concentrate as a staple sweetener, and used to boil it down in lead vessels to increase the sweetness.

Another thing that held them back was no "horse collar." The invention of the horse collar allowed the use of horses to pull a plow. That made a major difference in agriculture production.

They didn't have stirrups or soap either, both later Gothic inventions.
