SOES is the Small Order Execution System used for trading Nasdaq stocks with a maximum of 1000 shares per 6 minutes. Traders sit in front of screens reflecting the bid/ask prices of the market makers and try to arbitrage the difference when a MM fails to keep up with the other MMs in changing the spread. By generating high number of transactions with profits as little as 1/16, a trader can possibly make or lose lots of $$$ in a given day.
