Veritas,(VRTS) looks like a king to me. Their software manages storage at all levels, even with a hybrid network using various operating systems. Disks have to be defragmented, backups have to be done in such a way that the system can keep on running while they are being done. The operations should be able to be resumed perfectly when the system goes back up after a crash. Their nearest competitor in size, Legato, does less than half their volume of sales. The growth rate is over 40% per year. However the price is shockingly high. I'm not touting it. Since the user, i.e. the system manager, does not have to get involved in the internals, we can say that there is no proprietary architecture even though of course the internals are private. The stickiness is similar to that of web site host servers in that the moment of change over would be tricky. Disclaimer: I own some; I don't want to pay Canada's huge capital gains tax so I'm stuck with it. The price advance has been gorilla like but it is not a gorilla; there are no smaller companies that have to build things to be compatible with it.
