We tend to shrug off the importance of this change but it is a revolution of staggering importance and implications. What an amazing economy this is that can absorb a virtual doubling of the workforce in less than one generation.

It is even more amazing when you consider that it has been accomplished with large and steady increases in productivity of the work force, that enable fewer workers to produce more goods and services.
