DoCoMo to Offer Cell Phone Compatible With Sony's Memory Stick

--From AOL News.-- Cooters

Tokyo, Sept. 24 (Bloomberg) -- NTT DoCoMo Inc., Japan's biggest mobile phone company by subscribers, said that by the end of this year it will offer a phone that uses Sony Corp.'s Memory Stick to play music.

DoCoMo is exhibiting the device at the Tokyo Game Show 2000 this weekend in the Makuhari suburb.

Sony's chewing-gum-sized Memory Stick, which stores as much as 64 megabytes of data, will also allow DoCoMo phone users to listen to music prerecorded onto the stick using Sony personal computers and music devices, the company said in a press release.

The phone itself will not be capable of storing downloaded music or other data onto the Memory Stick, Sony said.

NTT DoCoMo is also exhibiting five prototype phones that use the W-CDMA standard, which enables higher-speed access to the Internet and which will be available in Japan from May 2001.
