I think the point has already been well made that gay relationships are common and accepted in America. Gay Marriages are already legal, as many churches and such are willing to perform the ceremonies. Like you, I doubt there will be any laws banning this sort of thing but nothing about the future is certain.

Gay marriages will always need to be qualified as 'gay marriages' and will not be effective in erasing the distinction heterosexual couples are able to bring to the term 'marriage', unlike the term 'interracial marriage' which is becoming a less and less applicable or important distinction as interracial marriages are becoming as normal as non-interracial. A different term like 'Civil Union' makes a lot of sense to people who are empathetic and believe there is nothing more to it than achieving equal legal and civil rights. Insisting upon cooption of the term 'marriage' tells us there is something more underlying the whole phenomenon.

I doubt gays will ever be comfortable with their difference and so will always be bugging heterosexuals to do something more to demonstrate acceptence of them in attempts to be seen as the same, but with a different orientation or as having an equivalent choice in life style. ... and the dramma continues.
