It is possible but the possibility leads to a separate topic. One that heterosexual married people don't agree on 100%. The more important question to ask therefore is not whether certain people should be bonded legally or not, it is, why is the institution of marriage important to a society at all? If it is the foundation of the basic family unit, which has tendrils to building communities, which are the building blocks of greater society ... then we are seeing traditional culture, or any alternative culture dependant upon the definition. Not all heterosexual couples want to meld in and be boosters for the local community while many gays do, so the question complicates itself as soon as we open it up.
