The only BOPs I've ever actually handled were ones made by VRC (now NOV) that were part of the drill string (an upper and lower BOP essentially at the top of the drill string)... they are nowhere near as "robust" as the primary ones at the well head/stack... more to preserve drilling fluids than to actually prevent a real hydrocarbon blowout.... used a ball-type valve.... VRC experimented with using rubber bladders in addition to the ball valves, but again, was more about mud/drilling fluids than preventing a Macondo-type blowout.

However, I've seen a lot of real (made by CAM) BOPs prior to installation, etc... but far from an expert.

However, one would think that off-center pipe while not desirable is certainly not unknown in the wild, so I'd have thought they'd be tested under that condition... BWTFDIK?
