DBC:"Ascend, Western Digital issue warnings NEW YORK (DBC) -- Networking and data storage companies could see their shares come under pressure Tuesday on the heels of Ascend Communications Inc. and Western Digital Corp.'s. grim warnings. Ascend said delays in shipments of its MAX TNT products and weaker-than-expected delays in other segments would hurt third-quarter results. The company foresees profits of 18 to 20 cents per share, after charges related to its acquistion of Cascade Communications. Most analysts had forecast earnings of 33 cents per share. The stock has been battered in the past two weeks, as a host of analysts expressed concern about the September quarter. Ascend shares languished in after-hours trading, hovering around its closing price of 35 1/4. Data-storage specialist Western Digital plunged 7 1/2 to 41 in after-hours trading after saying fiscal first-quarter earnings will total 63 to 66 cents a share, far short of the 83 cents that analysts estimated. The company cited pricing pressure in its core disk-drive market. Fiscal second-quarter results will also miss expected levels because a competitor created excess inventory in the distribution channel with a liquidation, Western said.
