Carl & Kevin; From my casual obesrvations, it looks like the real advantages of Cyrix's and AMDs' processors won't see complete results until either they can take advantage of new board and interconnect technologies such as AGP or they use the cpabilities to define new product initiatives outside of the course dominated by Intel.

Intel must try to maintain margins and are therefore thrown on the traditional path toward expensive processors supported by huge memory and hard disk systems loaded with gigantic and growing Microsoft software suites. Intel (and Microsoft) have largely ignored the corporate communities pleas to develop less expensive to maintain systems (cost to maintain a corporate desktop PC is over $10,000/year including hardware, software, maintenance and training). Grove said that the idea of the NC didn't make any sense until recently when he did a turn about and announced that Intel had put together an effort.

What impresses me about the Cyrix M2 design is that it will apparently run 32 bit code at least as fast as the Klamath and will spin circles around Intels' offerings in running MMX code. Although the advantages of MMX won't be fully appreciated for some time, the real advantage for Cyrix may be in being able to spin flavors of a GX type part that has software driven graphics and communications functions as well as core logic. The Pentiums' version of MMX, as I understand it, are not sufficiently robust to support the needed graphics or modem functions without the use of accelerators.
