Regarding your comments on LAF - The company is also a major producer of cement and aggregates. They have benefited from an 8 year construction boom and will only continue to benefit more due to the multi-billion dollar TEA 21 bill the government signed into action last year. In addition, most construction markets have realized cement price increases for 3-4 to for years running. This has not happened since the early 70's. Technology is in their favor - the industry has consolidated over the last thirty years and there are now less production plants nationally that are producing more than their rated capacity. Capacity utilization rates for Nov 98 (data is lagging in this industry) were 97.9 vs 95.4 Nov 97.

Regarding wallboard - typically when there is a shortage prices due rise. However, the industry lacks management controls - prices tend to slide greatly once capacity is up again. If they could just hold on to some of the positive consequences of supply and demand we would all be better off.

Hope this information helps - I enjoy reading your thread and by the way this is my first post!
