The current theory is that the letter thing may not have been true either. The investigators are suggesting a different scenario. All speculation mind you and probably false. Here is the new (I want to be a hero) theory:

She has been a gung ho forest worker for a long time. Her peers know her as someone who would turn in her own brother for lighting his cigar in a restricted area. The estranged husband doesn't write letters, he gets on the cell phone and rants, but doesn't write. Even if he did write a letter it would not have been more than a page (Says his father). Her job is to patrol the area and make sure no one is using fire. So she comes on this abandoned fire ring. Nothing but ashes surrounded by a ring of stones and lights this letter on fire. The letter gets out of control and catches the surrounding forest on fire and she is unable to bring it under control. The fire investigators say this scenario doesn't match the evidence at the scene.

The new thoery is that this gung ho worker started a small fire thinking she could extinguish it and get hero credit from her coworkers for dowsing the thing. That doesn't seem right either but who knows.

The charges against her would be the same in any event. She knowingly lit a fire in the restricted area and knew better than anyone the danger.
