I just came across this tidbit I hadn't seen before. Never occurred to me. "4. "Happy Holidays" was not created to soothe the non-Christians. It was meant to shorten the traditional "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year". Only recently did some people see "Happy Holidays" as a way to respect non-Christians - especially considering the commercial nature of the season and the fact that the birth of Jesus had and has so little to do with Christmas. Nobody says, "Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year" because everybody recognizes that the New Year is one of the holidays. Ironically, New Year's Eve celebrations reflect the more traditional ways that people celebrated Christmas - through raucousness and drunkenness. Thus, the overall "Holiday season" nicely pulls together modern Victorian and post-Victorian family-centric and commercialized Christmas along with the traditional wild Christmas celebration though now relegated to New Year's Eve.
