>>>Off topic, SCSI: Chaz, I shopped all over the net, even el cheapo ISA adaptec cards are $40.<<<

Look at Promise cards. I used a few of these back when, and they were OK. Here's a link to their blowout sale page, which has some adapters for 20 bucks and up, for ISA, VESA, and PCI at various prices. Also just check their home page and hunt around. Not loved by everyone, but I never had a problem installing one.

I found a few ISA adaptecs in Micro Times (SF Edition) for around 40 bucks. I was surprised: as you say, most outfits seem to have stopped carrying them sometime in the last few months.

As far as those IDE cables go from local suppliers, all I can say is those robots put those damn connectors on a lot faster than I or you can. I think that's the problem.

BTW, for all of you stubbornly clinging to old equipment you need parts for: weirdstuff.com If you need a half inch tape drive or an ancient adapter type or some software for that 386-25 with Win 3.1 this might be the place for you.
