A Scoop!

By Matthew Yglesias

The crack investigative teams at both major national newspapers seem to have simultaneously broken the story that lots of Democrats are unhappy with Joe Lieberman's view on the war, which makes me wonder what kind of behind the scenes activity prompted that. I did a piece on Lieberman back in April when it looked like there was an outside chance of a Democratic primary challenge, and I think it holds up pretty well as an analysis of the phenomenon. Obviously, there's a wide range of views on Iraq within the Democratic Party (within the TPM Cafe family, even) but it takes a special kind of Senator to launch what is, in essence, a partisan attack on his own party while simultaneously upholding the view that a Republican president should be immune from war-related criticism.
