Hi Matt,
Collapse from the failure of the very many computer systems(that won't make y2k remediation) around the world that are used to support our lives. Utilities, telecommunications, food industry, manufacturing plants, oil pipelines, banking, etc...
"Oh come on Anton", you ask, "they'll all get it fixed in time." To that I say, it is a scientific impossibility. There is no y2k tool that can completely fix the problem. They are only tools that can speed the process up, but the task is simply too enormous to complete in the short time frame. The deadline is Jan, 1 2000 and it can't be pushed back. Did you know there is not one y2k compliant telecommunications company, or that the 2 largest bank in the US are not y2k compliant and most likely will not finish in time? The intesity level of the aftermath of y2k is debatable, but it would be wise not to take any chances and make personal and family preparations.
Do some hard research on y2k, and beware of corporate and government propaganda. They only tell you what you want to hear. Here's something to get you started by a distinguished economist, Ed Yardeni. Also a GAO(General Accounting Office) testimony. Spread the awareness and maybe the landing will become easier for us all.
