Not everyone thinks the merger is a great deal; this from Briefing.com:

What was Eckhard Pfeiffer thinking?... Compaq Computer announced that it plans to acquire Digital Equipment for nearly $30 in cash and $30 in stock... Total deal valued at $9.6 bln - the largest merger ever in tech sector... DEC to become wholly owned subsidiary with same leadership... Tough to figure this one given DEC's history of underperforming market expectations and declining market share... CPQ sees purchase as way to add to client base, increase exposure to corporate/services market and take on IBM for status as "king of the hill"... But Briefing's initial reaction to deal is that addition of DEC will act as a drag on CPQ's growth... Corporate cultures also not the best of matches... Not surprisingly CPQ share fell nearly 3 points on the announcement.
