Context Matters
Ranting Profs
By Cori Dauber

Every news organization reported that Saddam bitched about having to walk up four flights of stairs.

Only John Burns provides the context to explain why that mattered. nytimes.com

I still think this has to be an Iraqi trial for the Iraqi people, that moving it out of the country is a disaster, but the judge has got to get control of this thing. And I worry that his not being in court may have also been read as his getting his way.

That whole glass booth idea wasn't a bad one.

Meanwhile, the press is right to report on the battle of wills between Saddam and the judge -- it clearly matters enormously. But they should be doing a better job of reporting about the witness testimony.

I saw an interview with an embassy official (I have no idea where to go to get a link to this) who's been working with the Iraqis in preparation for the trial. He was asked if there was one piece of testimony that particularly moved or chilled him. He said what really got him was when Witness A, the first woman who testified, told the story of the one kind guard who brought milk and water to keep the children alive. After awhile, she said, the men began to beg this guard to please torture them in front of the other guards. They were afraid that if he didn't he would be replaced, and they told him if that happened their children would all die. The thought of men being reduced to begging to be tortured was just chilling, this official said. I'm tearing up again just typing this story.

Did you hear a single reporter retell that story, or did they all just stick to the easier and faster fact that her legs were held up and she was beaten with cables?
